Steinbeck? Great! This edition? Not so great. Amazon page shows a dust cover. This book came with a slip case, unlike the other three books in this series I have but did not come with a dust cover, like the other three books in the series. I'm happy to be finally replacing old and torn up paperback copies of these great novels. But I would have preferred to have dust covers on this book to match the other three in the series that I have. A small issue, I know. But it would look better on my bookshelf.

The publishers chose well in combining these books, because people will buy the edition just to read "Grapes of Wrath". The other books, "Harvest Gypsies", "The Long Valley", and "The Log from the Sea of Cortez" are far less known. We read excerpts of these lesser known works in a Steinbeck class that I took at Stanford University several years ago, but I've never gone back to finish them. However, I have read "Grapes of Wrath" numerous times. It's such a poignant story of a difficult time in our country's history, and memorably captures the struggles of destitute families to survive the devastation of the dust bowl in the Midwest. This hardbound book is of the highest quality with a nice binding and ribbon book mark. If you are a fan of Steinbeck, it's worth owning the entire collection.

I bought the hardback version and it's a bit heavy, but a good size for reading in bed and the font isn't too small. The pages are very robust, and after nearly 80% through Grapes of Wrath, I discovered a little ribbon bookmark tucked in the binding which is a very nice touch.

The book contained more writings than I than thought and was much better quality than I expected. Was a good buy.

This Library of America edition continues its series of John Steinbeck's works. Steinbeck is my favorite author. I find these copies comfortable to read in relation to print and book size. I disagree that the thin pages make it "difficult" to read. There doesn't appear much transparency through the pages at all to me. I personally am very pleased with these copies.
