Beautiful
This book draws the faces of the people beautifully. Some books we have on Africa draw people in odd ways. I appreciated the realism and expression in this book without being too realistic. I also liked the lesson the book teaches that value is not in a building or possessions but in the learning. Too many kids today in the US blow off their educations. As a teacher, it breaks my heart to be trying to hand them something so valuable, but they don't want it. I loved this book and will cherish it with my kids.

Valuing Education
A good story to add diversity to your child's bookcase. These kids in Chad have to build their schoolhouse anew every year. The commitment to learning, the willingness to do whatever it takes to get an education, is a good lesson for kids in a place where schools don't get washed away by the rains every year. It includes a kid-friendly map of Africa. Appropriate for Pre-K through 2nd grade.

Great book!
I used this book as the introductory lesson in a unit on the lengths at which children across the world must go to to receive their education, and it was perfect! My students and I loved it!

Beautiful and educational
Touching and heartwarming story about schoolchildren in Chad, Africa. Every year before school starts, they need to build their own school. Since they only have mud bricks to use, the school is washed away during the rainy season. Beautiful illustrations accompany the heartfelt story. This book can also be used in the classroom. There is also a nice nap of Africa included.
